Explaining “we can’t go” without making it a speech
August 12, 2026
"We can't go" is a complete sentence. Kids will ask why. You do not owe a board meeting.
The goal is honesty without horror, enough truth that they trust you, not so much detail that they start managing the household budget at age eight. For a deeper age-by-age version, read talking to kids about money.
The short script
- The no: "We're not going to that one."
- The reason (one line): "It's not in our plan this month." / "We're saving for home stuff first."
- The door: "Want to help pick something we can do instead?"
That is the whole speech. Stop talking.
Age-size the why
Little kids: "We buy food and our house first. Then fun. This is a food-and-house week."
School age: "We have a money plan. The plan says yes to the park and the library. It says not this month to the big ticket thing."
Teens: "Here's the shape: rent, food, gas, then leftover. Leftover isn't there for this. You're not the problem. The calendar is."
Phrases that help
- "Not this time" (leaves room for later without promising)
- "That's a want. We're covering needs first."
- "I wish we could. We can't this round."
Phrases that hurt
- "Because of you / your brother / your mother"
- "We're broke" said like a threat
- A twenty-minute inflation lecture
- "Don't tell anyone"
Fear and secrecy are not money education. Calm limits are.
Offer a real alternative
A no with nothing after it feels like a wall. A no with a walk, a movie night, a friend at the park, or a homemade version of the expensive thing feels like parenting. Party FOMO? See birthday party math.
You are allowed to be disappointed too. Feel it away from the kid if you can. Then come back and be the adult who can say no without collapsing.
The point
"We can't go" does not mean "we are failing." It means you are steering. Broke does not mean broken, and a short, kind no is one of the most expensive-looking skills a dad can have for free.
Quick answers
- How do I tell my kid we can't go without shaming them?
- Use a short script, the no, one-line reason, and an alternative. Skip blame, long lectures, and detailed adult debt talk.
- What should I say instead of "we're broke"?
- Try "It's not in our plan this month" or "We buy food and home first, then fun." Calm limits beat fear language.
